Kansas City fails to make NFL history

by marusia

The Philadelphia Eagles won the 59th Super Bowl in history, which took place on Monday night Moscow time in New Orleans. In the match for the main NFL trophy, the team from Pennsylvania beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40:22.

For the Eagles, this is the second title in history: the last time they won was in the 2017 season.

However, the main sports result of the Super Bowl for almost all fans outside of Philadelphia is that Kansas City failed to become the first team in NFL history to take three titles in a row.

It is important to understand that the NFL is an extremely competitive league. The regular season consists of only 17 games, the playoffs – only one game in each round, no best-of-four series. The cost of error is extremely high, as is the role of chance or luck/bad luck. There is almost no time or opportunity to fix anything, one loss – and the whole season can go wrong. Here is a fact: Philadelphia, which played Kansas in the Super Bowl two years ago, did not make it to the playoffs the following season. The same thing happened this season with San Francisco, which competed with the Chiefs last year.

So, of course, Kansas City has already established itself as a great dynasty team – for them, this was their fifth final in the last six years, and they won three of them. But they have not yet managed to enter the pantheon of the greatest teams in the history of North American sports. The last team to win three titles in a row in the major sports leagues of the United States are the Lakers basketball team, who were NBA champions in 2000-2002. With Kobe Bryant entering his prime and the dominant Shaquille O’Neal, coached by Phil Jackson.

The Super Bowl itself turned out to be surprisingly one-sided. The Chiefs, who were considered favorites due to their past achievements, couldn’t do anything at all. They were losing 0-24 at halftime — the biggest gap in Super Bowl history since 1989. Kansas managed to cross into the opponent’s half of the field for the first time only at the end of the third quarter, when the score was 0-34. At the end, when Philadelphia had already started celebrating, the score became a little more respectable, but nothing more.
