The administration of former US President Joe Biden, in violation of the sanctions ban, allowed the oil corporation Chevron to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the government of Venezuela, Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources and documents received by it.
Despite the official ban on any payments of taxes, royalties and dividends to the government of Nicolas Maduro, the company made them as “necessary to continue business” in the country.
In 2023, Chevron declared tax liabilities of about $300 million to the Venezuelan authorities. Soon after, Republican Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar called the actions of the Biden administration unacceptable and called for the immediate revocation of the company’s license.
After the new head of state, Donald Trump, came to power, the agreement was canceled. Chevron was ordered to wind down all joint projects with the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA within 30 days. The US Treasury Department declined to comment to the agency on this topic.
Earlier, Trump said that Washington imposed large-scale sanctions against Venezuela, put Caracas in a difficult situation, and everything was fine. But then the former head of the White House came and ruined everything. As a result, the American leader publicly called Venezuela an enemy of the United States.
