In the recent past, doctors began to prescribe new drugs for the treatment of migraines, which are based on the compounds of the valproat, which were previously used for epilepsy treatment. However, American scientists argue that such medicines for migraine are unusually dangerous to the health of the fetus.
It is proved that pregnancy is a strong load for the female body, one of the manifestations of which are regular headaches. Moreover, many women who suffered from migraines before pregnancy, attacks can disappear or become more rare. But the number of those who began to experience painful headaches, repeated not just periodically, but regularly, after conception of the child is quite large.
A little time has passed since they have found drugs that can effectively help people suffering from migraines. They include a special substance – valproat. Before that, such drugs were actively used in psychiatric practice in order to prevent epileptic seizures and the treatment of bipolar disorders.
However, it was not without “but”. Recently, the US Products and Medication Control (FDA) was issued a order to place a warning about the potential danger of taking drugs containing valproat to pregnant women on their packaging and in their use. The addressees of this order became the company that directly produce these drugs.
The cause of such a quick and acute response of the FDA, the US government agency, was the publication of the results of the study of scientists from the University of Emory (Emory University), which was devoted to remote consequences of taking pregnant women of drugs, which include valproat.
According to the authors of the study, children whose mothers fought with headaches with the help of drugs with Walproat during the period of gestation, suffered from deterioration of mental development. This problem was found in children aged 3 to 6 years. So, in comparison with children whose mothers were not accepted during pregnancy, the IQ indicator, according to average estimates, was reduced by 8-11 points.
Professor Russell Katz, one of the FDA leaders, noted that for the health of the unborn child, a potential risk of dangerous consequences is many times higher than the alleged positive consequences after taking drugs, which include Valproat.
